What are GLP-1 treatments?

GLP-1 and GIP treatments are medicines used in the treatment of obesity, for weight loss and metabolic control — by medical prescription only. In Japan, the medicine named on this page is approved for type 2 diabetes; using it for weight control is an individual medical decision outside the approved indication.

They are medicines in the GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist class, given by subcutaneous injection, usually once a week. They are not over-the-counter diet products or supplements: they are prescription medicines, prescribed and monitored by a doctor.

They mimic hormones your own gut releases after a meal. The result is more satiety, slower gastric emptying and less hunger through the day, which tends to reduce how much you eat without relying on willpower. Their effect on blood glucose is why this class began in the treatment of diabetes.

The indication is always individual, and the doctor decides it during the assessment. Your BMI and body composition, your personal and family history, the medicines you already take and any recent blood work all count. There is no automatic threshold, and we do not prescribe from a form.

A GoCLN doctor still has to make their own assessment: we do not continue a prescription written by another service without seeing you. Bring the prescription, the name and dose of the medicine and any recent tests — that shortens the conversation, but it does not replace the consultation.

  • In Japan this medicine is approved for type 2 diabetes. Using it for weight control is an individual medical decision outside the approved indication, and it will be explained to you before any prescription.

Who it is for

Eligibility is decided by the doctor during the assessment, case by case. There is no automatic criterion, and we do not prescribe from a form.

  • Adults from 20 years old
  • Your BMI and body composition
  • Personal and family health history
  • The medicines you currently take
  • Recent blood work, where available

When it is not indicated

It is not indicated during pregnancy or breastfeeding, nor for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2. Tell the doctor about every medicine and supplement you take, including anything bought without a prescription.

Risks and side effects

The most common effects are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain and reduced appetite. They tend to be strongest at the start and when the dose goes up.

Serious effects are uncommon and include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems and allergic reactions. Seek immediate care for severe, persistent abdominal pain.

The doctor will explain the risks that apply to your case before any prescription. This list is informational and does not replace a consultation.

Why here

Your language, start to finish

Explaining symptoms in Japanese is hard, and in medicine a misunderstanding is expensive. The consultation is in English, with a doctor — not with a translator.

Preventive medicine, not just the scale

The clinic works in preventive diagnostics and longevity. Weight is one marker among several: blood pressure, blood glucose, sleep and body composition are part of the conversation too.

A real clinic, in Tokyo

We are not an app. There is an address in Roppongi, with consulting rooms and staff, and you can come in person whenever you want or need to.

Frequently asked questions

Do you guarantee how much weight I will lose?
No. No honest medical treatment guarantees a result, and we do not work with promises of kilos or timeframes. What we offer is individual assessment, monthly follow-up and clarity about the risks.
Do I need to live in Tokyo?
No. The consultation is online and we see people anywhere in Japan. During the consultation we agree with you how the medication will be collected or sent.
How long does treatment last?
It depends on your response and on the doctor's assessment at each review. There is no fixed term, and stopping is always your decision, discussed with the doctor.
Does health insurance cover it?
No. It is private treatment (自由診療), paid in full by the patient. The price on this page already includes tax.
What language are the prescription and documents in?
The consultation is in English. Prescriptions and official documents are issued in Japanese, as the law requires, and we explain what each one says.
What if the doctor says it is not for me?
It happens, and it is a legitimate outcome of the assessment. The initial consultation is free, so you lose nothing but fifteen minutes — and you leave knowing why.

Start with the assessment

Fifteen minutes, in English, at no cost. If the treatment is not right for you, the doctor will say so.
